BACKGROUND:
This clutch began its development many years (and
several worn-out parts) ago. In both our '65 Corvair turbo and '66
140 Corsa coupe, we had overpowered the organic clutches and shook our
teeth out with the fully metallic disc. The fully organic disc had
a great pedal feel and a nice smooth engagement, but could not withstand
the 200+ horsepower to the rear wheels. We then went to the fully
metallic (3 pad) clutch. It had all the holding power in the world
but it did not have the nice smooth engagement of the organic. It
was either in or out, and it tore up the flywheels something fierce.
We then started looking at what was happening and figured out we could
use both materials to achieve the best clutch to date.
This technology lets
us put the best organic lining on the pressure plate side and metallic
lining on the flywheel side. This allows the clutch to engage
smoothly against the organic side and then the metallic side prevents
total slippage as it heats up.
