BACKGROUND:
Yes, of course we love Corvairs,
but that doesn't make us completely crazy. Believe it or not, the often
overlooked 1960 housing has a concentric breaker plate as opposed to the
later housing that sweeps across an arc. This simple difference
allows the early housing to maintain a consistent air gap.
We use the 1960 housing, then
incorporate a modern reluctor and pick-up coil to provide a consistent
signal with no point-bounce. It is readily available at most parts
houses. Then we mount a GM HEI module to the distributor housing
and BINGO! You get a distributor that will provide a consistent
spark past the RPM most Corvair owners would ever consider taking their
engine. It has a good enough signal that turning it by hand will
actually create a spark across an HEI test plug! Try that with
other conversions!
The late model housing have been
converted as well, but the air-gap varies as it sweeps across the arc.
We have been running these
conversions for over 5 years without any electrical problems.
